The website is essentially about Gary Gates, a Novato Girls Softball coach in the 1980s, and his wish for a lighted softball field “for the girls.” Gary died prematurely in 1990.
After Gary’s death, Jim Spilman tasked himself with making Gary’s dream become reality. After 20+ years of dedicated leadership, thousands of volunteer hours, many fundraisers, a supportive community and local sponsors; Gary’s wish is a reality.
Gary Gates Field at San Marin High School, in addition to being the home field for the San Marin High Softball team, regularly hosts Novato Girls Softball games, MCAL playoffs, and North Coast Section championship games.

The lighted softball field is a reality. However, equipment upgrading and routine maintenance continue.
